On March 5, 2010 the Cleveland Cavailers and Snuggie are going for a Guinness World Record for the "largest gathering of people wearing a fleece blanket." Some may say the real record set will be for the "most people annoyed that the Snuggie is still in the mainstream." Like or not the backwards robe is here to stay and now you will probably have to listen to ESPN's Stuart Scott talking about the armed blanket.

Cleveland Cavaliers and KeyBank have partnered up for this record setting night. By "partnering" we believe that means that KeyBank foots the bill for the 20,562 Snuggie blankets that they will give to each fan. Although you have to figure out they bought some extras in case some of the Cavaliers executives have sticky fingers.

So how does one set the "largest gathering of people wearing a fleece blanket?" It's quite simple actually; you asked 20,000 fans to wear the Snuggie for the first five minutes of the game. Do you think that this is a promotion or a way for the Cavaliers to turn down the thermostat in the building to save on their energy bill? If those people on TV wearing a Snuggie can save money living in a small house, think of the savings the Cavs will recognize for a 750,000 square feet building?

Guinness World Records will be sending their best man, Danny Girton to verify the event. It's no coincidence that Mr. Girton drew the short straw when it came time to pick the adjudicator for this Snuggie soiree. We just hope that Mr. Girton can count fast; think how difficult it will be to count how many of the 20,562 people are actually wearing the Snuggie?

Hopefully Mr. Girton will not be afraid to use the instant replay to ensure he gets the call right. Once the record has been set, all the fans will receive a commemorative magnet to validate their participation. Remember this date, March 6, 2010; this will be first day you'll be able to get your hands on one of those magnets on eBay and Craigslist.

It was reported by AP that Guinness World Records adjudicator, Danny Girton Jr., who attended the game, announced that the new world record has been set.

On a side note, do you think Mr. Girton from Guinness World Records got good seats to the game...you know...to help influence him in case there were some people who only had one arm in the sleeves?

Although it's not official, it's believed that the previous world record for the "largest gathering of people wearing a fleece blanket," was six people. This occurred at a kids' soccer game in Minnesota when one of the mothers accidentally ordered three blankets, not knowing about the "get the 2nd one free" deal.
